![]() ![]() The festival also gets emails from interested filmmakers all over the world, Grumette said. The festival will continue last year's inaugural Gold Coast screenings of local and regional films, including some made through Patagonia, the Ventura-based outdoor clothing and gear company. The list is especially strong in documentaries and animated films, he said, and also sports an inordinate number of live action shorts. The 77 film screenings on this year's Ojai slate were chosen from hundreds of submissions, Grumette said. "They're all household words," Grumette said of Roizman's body of work. His impressive string of film credits includes "Tootsie," "Network," "The French Connection," "The Exorcist," "Wyatt Earp," "Grand Canyon," "Havana," "Taps," "Absence of Malice," "Three Days of the Condor" and "French Kiss." Roizman, a five-time Oscar nominee, is this year's recipient. The other lifetime achievement honoree continues another festival tradition ? tipping a cap to a cinematographer. "South Pacific," which won one Oscar (for sound) out of its three nominations, also features the song "Some Enchanted Evening" and the Seabees singing the rousing "Bloody Mary." The film was based on the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which in turn was based on the 1947 Pulitzer Prize-winning James Michener book "Tales of the South Pacific." Gaynor starred in such big 1950s musicals as "There's No Business Like Show Business, "The Joker Is Wild," "Les Girls" and "Anything Goes," work that paired her with such stars as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly and Ethel Merman. She will be given a lifetime achievement award. "She's very charming, very funny and very lively, but I doubt she'll do any dancing," Grumette said with a good-natured laugh. Steve Grumette, the festival's founder and artistic director, said landing Gaynor ? achieved through a board member's connections ? is an honor. ![]() Thursday at Libbey Bowl, and Gaynor, now 80, is slated to make a rare public appearance at the event. The "South Pacific" screening will be held at 7 p.m. The four-day event also will honor cinematographer Owen Roizman, screen 77 films at several venues around town, host discussion panels and toss out a few film awards. Gaynor and the 1958 film will jump-start next week's Ojai Film Festival, and why not? Gaynor's memorable turn as Ensign Nellie Forbush is her signature role, one in which she had the chops to sing "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," among other things.Ī newly restored version of "South Pacific" will be the opening night film at the 12th annual festival, which begins Thursday and runs through Oct. We're pretty sure that Mitzi Gaynor has finished washing that man right outta her hair by now, but she's going to show up next week in Ojai and relive all the glory that was "South Pacific" anyway. ![]()
